Abrasion Resistant Material Handling Systems

Cast Basalt – Abrasion Resistant Linings

Cast basalt is a neo-volcanic eruptive rock which is cast in a method similar to that of cast iron. After careful annealing it forms a re-crystallized black ceramic of extreme hardness and abrasion resistance. In addition it will withstand temperatures up to 800°F. Unlike other materials which roughen as solids pass over it, cast basalt develops a high polish. Its slick surface allows materials to flow freely across its surface which eliminates hang ups and blockages.

Steel Pipe Cross Section – Lined with Cast Basalt

Cast basalt can be cast into virtually any shape. For its use as a pipe work lining the cast basalt is cast into cylinders. The cylinders are typically inserted into a steel shell and secured with cement. The exterior casing can be spiral welded pipe, standard ERW pipe, fiberglass, stainless steel etc. The pipe ends can be flanged, plain for Dressers couplings or grooved for Victaulic couplings. Flanged ends can be adapted to fit up to any existing system.

Any inside diameter of pipe can be matched but typically standard sizes are used. Fittings, including elbows, tees, laterals etc. can be lined with cast basalt. The overall dimensions of the fittings are not limited and therefore any centerline radius elbow can be built and lined.

Tests and field experience gathered over the last 60 years show that cast basalt will outlast most other wear protection products in slurry applications.

Alumina Ceramic – Abrasion Resistant Linings

Alumina is a cost effective and widely used material in the family of engineered ceramics. Alumina ceramics have been developed and optimized for maximum wear resistance and corrosion resistance. A high density, diamond like hardness, fine grain structured and superior mechanical strength are the unique properties that make it the material of choice for a wide range of demanding applications.

Alumina CeramicCeramic has uses similar to cast basalt but it has greater resistance to wear in high velocity applications and impact resistance in extreme dynamic systems.

CBP Engineering provides its customers with the full range of abrasion resistant lined pipe work including straight pipe, bends and elbows, reducers, tees and y-pieces. CBP Engineering offers a comprehensive range of lining materials designed to combat erosion.

Basalt and alumina ceramic are the two generally accepted lining materials. Other linings which complement the basalt and ceramic include Eucor, AZS, silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide, and ceramic filled epoxy coatings.

Here are a few examples of our abrasion resistant material handling system products. Basalt and Ceramic are the industry standard for abrasive applications / abrasion resistant products. Shown are various pieces using basalt, ceramic and silicon carbide (Eucor / AZS). Contact C.B.P. with your questions regarding abrasion resistant products, rest assured we have your answers.
